The Biochemistry Unit of the Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine from the University of Porto (FMUP), organizes the Symposium on Metabolism annually. In its 11th edition, it will cover the theme "Ageing & Metabolism".

Living longer is an established reality which raises opportunities but also concerns specifically regarding health issues and the quality of life of the elderly.

Understanding and discussing mechanisms of ageing, their molecular consequences and the intersection with metabolism, from the cell to the whole organism, will actively feed progress in the circumvention of age-related diseases and in the identification of therapeutic approaches towards the ultimate goal of healthy ageing. This is the driving purpose of the 11th Symposium on Metabolism.

This Symposium, occurring on the 30th October 2019, at the Auditorium of CIM-FMUP, intends to target researchers, physicians and students who have interests in metabolism and particularly in the way metabolism is modulated by the ageing process.

Metabolic fitness and energy homeostasis in ageing and cellular mechanisms of senescence are the main topics that will be covered by renowned international and national scientists and experts in the field.

Researchers are invited to submit their works for presentation as posters or oral communications.
